Nairobi, KENYA: The Church on Wednesday called on the government to rescind its decision of forceful repatriation of refugees and closing down Dadaab camp.
In a media briefing in Nairobi led by Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops Homa Bay branch chair Philip Anyolo ,said that such a move violates human rights ,the constitution and international conventions.
“We therefore urge the government to reconsider its decision and pursue opportunities for dialogue and work with relevant authorities to make sure the smooth and voluntary repatriation of refugees .” Rev Anyolo said.
Rev Anyolo warned that the repatriation will pose danger to the refugees following the fact that the security status of some of our neighbouring countries is unstable.
“We reiterate that any form of involuntary repatriation may expose the returnees to danger of persecution. We are deeply concerned that forcible return of refugees will cause catarastrophic human consequences.” He insisted
The church urged the government to reactivate the department of refugees with immediate effect and enhance security within the refugee camps.
Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery earlier this month announced closure of refugee camps, particularly in the Dadaab complex, arguing that has become hiding places for terrorists and their agents ,a scenario which is detrimental to Kenya’s security.
