Mombasa, KENYA: A 20-year old man was on Tuesday charged for attempted suicide in Mombasa law court.
Patrick Kamau allegedly jumped from a moving ferry vessel MV Nyayo into the Indian ocean on Monday morning as the ferry was sailing from South Coast to Mombasa Island.
The accused denied charges and told court that ferry was congested and as a result he fell into the water accidentally.
“I tried swimming to save my life before I was rescued by Kenya ferry divers,” he said.
He also lost his memory and came to sense when he was hand cuffed at police station.
Chief Magistrate Teresia Matheka asked accused wether he was taken to hospital and the man said that he had not received medication as he was still not feeling well.
He also said he was a bread winner among his family members and pleaded to be released.
Prosecution termed his statement as defense and asked court to to give them time until Thursday when they will present case against the accused person.
This case will be heard on Thursday.
