Mombasa, KENYA: The southern part of Nyali Centre (Naivas) has been shut down until a detailed report on the structure has been submitted to Mombasa County secretary Francis Thoya.
Addressing the media at the scene on Monday ,Thoya said that they have had a meeting with the management of the building and that was the resolution made.
“The southern part of the building in which the washroom was anchored to it is going to be shut down. It will remain shut until we are sure that the structure is sound for the public to use,” he said.
He further added that the building that collapsed at around 3 am, is said to be part of latrines for the main Nyali center building.
“I can confirm that the washroom was from the sixth floor in one of the section of this building that collapsed. It is clear that the contractor and the engineer are responsible did not do their work. ” Added Thoya.
Thoya further expressed his worries over the poorly constructed six storey extension to the main Nyali Centre building that was part of latrines.
“What shocked me is that the toilets appeared to have been the extension to the building, the beam that was supposed to been carrying the load should have been running from the front part of the building up to the end, but what we are seeing is that the two parts of that building were not joined”. added Thoya.
Witnesses at the scene expressed their displeasure with what had happened calling for further action.
“The building collapsed you might think it was attached by glue, it has been God’s grace that no one has been injured or died in this incidence. Lucky, it collapsed in the wee hours of the morning”. Said one of the witnesses Mr. Osman.
The businesses premises affected by the shut down include: The Boxing Luonge, Turkish airlines, Java, Planet Yoghurt, Samsung shop, Dstv offices among many others.
No casualties were reported in the early Monday morning incident.
