Lamu, KENYA: Search efforts are underway in Lamu to find the body of a man who perished alongside his colleague after their boat capsized at KenGen area on Friday.
The accident took place at around 4am according to a survivor.
Police have so far recovered the body of the other boat occupant who perished three days ago after the vessel which was heavily laden with timber en route from Mkanda Channel to Lamu capsized and sank in Lamu island.
Two other occupants were able to swim to safety shortly after the accident took place.
Speaking in Lamu on Sunday,Lamu OCPD Zachary Kimani said the male body was found at the shores of Shella area on Sunday.
Kimani also said search efforts were being hindered by the high tides and heavy rains currently being experienced in the county.
“The search is being done by police and local divers. We found one body at Shella beach and are yet to find the other. The rains and high tides are making this whole exercise tougher but we are optimistic. We urge locals to head to the Lamu District hospital and identify the body,”said Kimani.
Kimani has urged boat users to ensure they wear life jacket whenever they are using the vessels to enable them stay afloat whenever such disasters happen at sea.
“We discovered that all occupants of the capsized boat didn’t have life jackets.Maybe if they did, then the story would be different. People should observe marine rules and that’s one of them,”said Kimani.
