Lamu, KENYA: Lamu County commissioner Joseph Kanyiri has ordered investigations into a case where a Kenya Defense Forces-KDF soldier based in Garissa is said to have forcefully married an underage school girl in Witu.

The officer who is currently on leave in Lamu is said to have collaborated with the 15 year old girl’s parents into coercing the girl into having sex with him after which she was secretly‘forcefully’married off to the soldier.

According to the parents of the girl, no other man would have agreed to marry their daughter after she had deliberately lost her virginity to another man and hence the marriage.

Speaking in his Lamu office , the county commissioner however said he had already ordered investigations to ascertain the role played by the parents in the matter and thereafter their arrests and prosecution.

Kanyiri on Monday said his office would not tolerate individuals who abuse children and who do not honor the rights of minors including soldiers.

“The rights of minors must be protected. We shall arrest and charge all those involved once investigations are through,”said Kanyiri.

He said parents must be on the front line in ensuring the rights of their children are well guarded and not the other way round.
