Mombasa, KENYA: Police in Likoni Mombasa on Tuesday , exhumed the body of one and a half year old baby girl ,who was secretly buried by her mother after being allegedly murdered.
Likoni police chief Willy Simba lead police officers and government pathologist,Evanson Odour during the exhumation exercise at,Kindunguni area.
Simba said the 28 year old Diana kwamboka is believed to have set their one rented room on fire at Shelly beach area, while the minor and his father Juma Anthony Mohammed were inside on April 8 this year.
Anthony later succumbed to death, due to the burns at the Coast General Hospital.
Simba said that neighbors who answered to the distress calls from, Anthony broke into the house that was locked from outside.
According to police Kwamboka is said to have gained entry into the house and rescued the minor who had been badly burnt.
“According to our investigations she managed to sneak, back into the house that was on fire ,after neighbors broke inside, she took the young girl and ran with her to another area where she started living with another man,” Said the police chief.
The police boss noted that the child died some days later and was buried secretly to avoid raising suspicion among the authority.
“She approached the village elder and, lied to him that the child had been ailing and had died at home and she wanted to be allowed to bury her in a nearby cemetery”,He Said.
He further added that Kwamboka would soon be arraigned in court to answer to two counts of murder once investigations were over.
Government pathologist Johansen Odour said a postmortem would be conducted on the body , of the minor so as to establish the cause of death.
Police at the scene of crime had a hard time, controlling a crowd that was baying for the woman’s blood,Kwamboka who lead police to her child’s grave watched calmly, as the body was being exhumed and was later whisked away by police amid tight security.
Police have been manning the grave for the last two weeks.
