London,UK:Riyad Mahrez became the first African player to win the Professional Footballers Association-PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday following his commendable season with Leicester City.
The Algerian international held off competitions from team-mates Jamie Vardy and N’Golo Kante to the award as well as Tottenham stiker Harry Kane, Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil and West Ham revelation Dimitri Payet.
Mahrez, 25, has had a stunning campaign with the Foxes, scoring 17 goals and providing 11 assists in a season that has seen Leicester rose from relegation battle to league contenders.
His most recent contribution came with the opening goal in the 4-0 win over Swansea City on Sunday.
The winger now joins a glittering list of former winners that include Kenny Dalglish, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli, a highly impressive performer in his first top-flight season, took the Young Player of the Year award.
