Mombasa,KENYA:A suspected robber was on Wednesday lynched by a furious mob in Kisauni area in Mombasa County.
His accomplice sustained serious panga cuts after a beating from the mob which threatened to burn him alive but he was rescued by police.
According to area residents, the two have been involved in a spate of crimes in the area.
They were allegedly caught red handed harassing passengers by snatching valuables from moving Matatus plying the Bamburi-Town center route.
The incident caused tension forcing several businesses including shops to close hurriedly after word went round that other criminal gang members were attacking people randomly to protest the lynching.
However, the situation cooled and things turned to normal.
Police later moved the body to the Coast General Provincial Hospital mortuary CPGH.
The expansive Kisauni area has been been hit with a series of robberies in the past one month.
Recently,police shot and killed three suspected robbers who had allegedly stolen from a petrol station in the area.
Kisauni area is also the home of two dreaded gangs”wakali wao” and “wakali kwanza”.
Coast region coordinator Nelson Marwa ordered police to reign in on the gangs disturbing the peace in Kisauni area.
