Nairobi, KENYA: History makers National Rugby Sevens team was handed a heroic reception upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, Kenya Airways CEO Mbuvi Ngunze and Kenya Rugby Union Chair Richard Omwela among other dignitaries turned up to receive the team.
With clock tickling HSBC Sevens champions Shujaa under the tutelage of head coach Benjamin Ayimba touched down Aboard a Qatar Airways plane sending fans into frenzy.
Then came the awaited moment when skipper Andrew Amonde finally showed up with the coveted trophy as crowd make known their feelings by blasting into cheers.
Shujaa would then head to Sereni Hotel Nairobi where the team’s sponsor, Kenya Airways had organized a luncheon.
Commenting on the maiden triumph, CS Hassan Wario applauded the Benjamin Ayimba led team hinting the Government will reward them for the success.
Kenya became the second nation in the continent after South Africa to have clinched the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series title, after they thrashed powerhouse Fiji 30-7 at the Sunday finals in Singapore.
