Mombasa, KENYA: Police have arrested 17 members of a notorious gang which have been terrorizing Mombasa residents following a crackdown.
The suspects were arrested Saturday night in areas of King’orani Majengo and Buxton after police carried out a swoop.
Police also recovered a cache of weapons from the suspects,that includes pangas,machetes,bhang stolen identity cards and some money.
Mombasa Deputy County Commissioner Mohammud Salim said the youth had given police vital information that could lead to more arrest.
He said security agents received information from the public about the criminal gangs that have been terrorizing them and that is when they planned to carry out a raid in their hide out.
The Deputy County Commissioner added that plain clothes police had to be used since the criminals were used to police in uniform.
The suspects were locked up at Makupa police station where they were being profiled.
“Most of those we arrested are from Kisauni and Likoni sub county,they are being led by criminals from Majengo to carry out attacks and robbing public,they stage attacks in the morning hours especially at dawn,”said Mr Salim.
Mr Salim noted that the criminal gangs were being ferried from Kisauni by TukTuk while armed and they were dropped at specific locations in Majengo and Kingorani areas where they carry out criminal activities.
