Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa high court on Friday sentenced to death a man found guilty of killing Muslim cleric Mohammed Idris.

Justice Martin Muya in his ruling said it was beyond no doubt that, Sudi Mohamed Sudi, is guilty after 17 witnesses tesfitied.

Sudi was found guilty of killing the moderate cleric in Manyatta Likoni as he was heading to the mosques at 5 am.

The cleric was transferred to Pandya hospital for further treatment where but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accused was arrested by flying squad who came from Nairobi and found him in possession of a pistol and hand grenade.

In their mitigation, the defense council Mr. Chacha Mwita had asked the court to give Sudi a non-custodian life sentence since he is a family man, whose two wives and seven children depend on him.

However, Justice Muya said death was the only sentence to murder charge.

Cleric Mohammed Idris was killed on 10 June 2014 at Manyatta area in Likoni within Mombasa County.
