Mvita, Old town youth shun away from police recruitment drive

Mombasa, KENYA: Mvita sub-county on Monday experienced a very low turn out in the police recruitment drive compared to the past years.

Reports say there was no single recruit from old town, raising more questions among local leaders and security agents in the county.

In Mvita ward,where the recruitment exercise took place only five youths turned up for the process according to police.

Old town and Majengo areas have experienced insecurity incidences for the past years; as majority of the suspects are  believed to be the youth armed with all sort of weapons.

The station was opened at 6 AM on Monday with the relevant officials ready for the same as many recruits from the two areas were expected in large numbers but to their surprise only few turned up.

According to Old Town ward representative Murfad Mohammed,majority of youth in the area have opted to join criminal gangs who are said to be terrorizing the public.
