Five police officers were killed on Tuesday when a vehicle they were travelling in stepped on a  landmine in Mangai area, Lamu county.

The officers were escorting a police  lorry carrying foodstuffs   to their usalama Camp located at the Lamu-Somalia border when the incident happened just a few kilometers from Milimani in Lamu East sub-county at around 11am.

According to a senior  police officer who requested anonymity.two other police officers sustained serious injuries.

It is also alleged that the more than 20-30 al shabaab militants armed with rifles exchanged fire with the police officers before escaping into the forest.

“The area is known to be dangerous as al shabaab have been roaming there.The  police vehicle overran a landmine planted on the road and it dismantle  the police vehicle”said the officer.

There were about nine police officers in the escort during the incident,a source added.

Coast region Police Commander Francis Wanjohi could no be reached for comment as his phone went unanswered.
