Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)’s national elections board has announced Willy Baraka Mtengo, former Kenya Ports Authority employee as its candidate in the forthcoming Malindi parliamentary by-election.
Chairperson of the party’s elections board Mrs. Judy Pareno unveiled the candidate to the public on Tuesday during a press conference attended by Deputy Party leader and Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho and Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi at Orange House , Nairobi.
This follows announced that was made on Monday by Pareno terming as a successful the nomination of the flag bearer who will be presented to the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC for clearance.
“The National Elections Board of the ODM has concluded the nominations exercise for the Malindi Parliamentary Seat by-election scheduled for March 7 2016. The NEB will therefore unveil the party candidate to the public tomorrow in readiness for the presentation to the IEBC for clearance,” Pareno said on Monday.
Deputy ODM party leader and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho on Monday led a meeting between all the aspirants at Orange House which is the party’s headquarter in Nairobi where final decision was reached.
The meeting between Governor Joho and 4 ODM aspirants was aimed consolidating them to avoid any fallout after the announcement of the flag bearer in the by-election.
Willy Baraka Mtengo will now fight it out for the Malindi Parliamentary seat with Jubilee Alliance Party candidate Phillip Charo.
The ODM nominations were Saturday marred by chaos following claims of theft and votes rigging.
The seat fell vacant following the appointment of the then MP Dan Kazungu to the docket of Cabinet Secretary in-charge of Mining.
The by-election is scheduled for 7th March,2017 according to IEBC.
