Aaron Cheruiyot will be the Jubilee Alliance Party’s flag bearer in the forthcoming Kericho Senatorial by-election.
The 30 year old businessman beat former ODM Director of elections Frankline Bett and former Executive Director of ODM Margerer Langat to win the nominations conducted over the weekend.
Mr.Cheruiyot garnered a total of 17,575 votes beating his closest rival Sammy Chepkwony who managed 17,801 votes.
Frankline Bett was third with 16,914 votes while Margerer Langat had total votes of 14,059.
All the aspirants who lost conceded defeat at the Kericho Teachers Training College and promised to support the winner and JAP party .
However,the nominations process was marred by delays in delivery of voting materials, low voter turn-out and allegations of voter bribery.
The JAP candidate will battle it out with KANU’s Paul Sang.
Sang who’s former Bureti MP enjoys support from the Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto’s Mashinani Development Party, after the governor announced that his new political outfit would not field a candidate in the by-election but would support Sang.
The KANU candidate is also likely to get support from Raila Odinga led Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) which had announced that they would support any candidate associated with the Bomet governor.
Mr.Sang vied for the seat in the 2013 General Elections and emerged second after URP’s Charles Keter who clinched the seat.
The Kericho Senatorial seat fell vacant after President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Charles Keter to the Cabinet, in charge of Energy and Petroleum.
The by-election will be held on 7th March ,2016 according the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
