Lionel Messi on Monday made history after he was named the best player on the planet for the fifth time, fending off competition from eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate Neymar Jr. to claim the FIFA Ballon d’Or award.
The FC Barcelona superstar last won the prestigious gong in 2013, before spending two successive years watching his archrival, Ronaldo, bagged back-to-back accolades.
However, in 2015 campaign, Messi redeemed himself after he was involved in 78 goals, firing 52 and further assisting for 26 strikes despite a two-month injury layoff due to knee ligament damage.
The Argentine maestro collected 41.3% of the votes, with Ronaldo receiving 27.8% in second place and Neymar coming third on 7.9%.
In addition, with Barcelona in pole position to repeat in both domestic tier and Champions League, it will not be a surprise seeing Messi on stage again come January next year.
