Desmond Tutu’s daughter weds lesbian lover

The daughter of the  first black Archbishop of Cape Town,South Africa Desmond Tutu; Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu,  has defied all odds to marry her long time lesbian lover Professor Marceline van Furth .

Rev Mpho tied the knot with her lover in a small private ceremony held in Oegstgeest a town and municipality in the province of South Holland in western Netherlands last Wednesday, December 30.

The mother of two, is an ordained Episcopal priest, the executive director of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, and also the executive director and founder of the Tutu Institute for Prayer and Pilgrimage.

Her partner Maceline on the other hand, is a professor in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Vrije University in Amsterdam, and holds the Desmond Tutu Chair in Medicine at the university.

Mpho is the youngest daughter of Archbishop Desmond and his wife Leah Tutu and was  previously married to US journalist Joseph Burri.

The couple is said to  plan on hosting another ceremony in Cape Town.

Retired Archbishop Tutu has been a huge campaigner in supporting same-sex marriage and has called the oppression of gay people around the world the “new Apartheid.”
