Voi students protest against SGR project, demand relocation

More than 600 Students from Voi Girls secondary school in Voi Taita Taveta county early Wednesday held peaceful demonstration in demand of relocation of their school.

They student protested against poor learning environment caused by ongoing construction of the Standard Gauge Railway  project in the area.

They claimed their health have been affected by dust and too much noise for a while from the SGR construction site which is just few meters from the school compound.

“We are really suffering. A large number of us now suffer from eye problems, diarrhea and endless coughs as a result of inhalation of dust from the china SGR project”, One of the students said.

They claim to have raised their grievances to the concerned officers and area leaders without positive response.

Our head teacher has been on the forefront highlighting our grievances to relevant offices but there have been laxity, thus we’ve decided to take action of demonstration”, They explained.

The girls also told Baraka FM that some leaders have been politicizing the issue of relocating the school as a score card for their 2017 elections.

Addressing the students during demonstration, area MCA Omar Ahmed confirmed having heard the students grievances and promised to act on it immediately.
