A woman suspected to have conspired to kill her husband over property worth millions of shillings was on Tuesday detained for 10 days to enable police to complete investigations.

Mrs Rose Adhiambo and her housemaid, Ms Doris Akinyi are suspected to have hired assassins to kill Mr Polycarp Ouma alias Kamili at Beach Road Estate in Mombasa.

Resident Magistrate Viola Yator allowed the application that wanted the two suspects to be detained at Bamburi police station.

Police Constable Dominic Kiptum told court that the two suspects, with others absent in court, conspired to kill Mr Ouma on diverse date between October 20 and 26.

In a sworn affidavit, the police officer claimed that Ms Adhiambo was nabbed by his husband at Kenya Commercial Bank, Naivas branch in Nyali while withdrawing Sh1.2 million, which was to be used to pay the hired assassins.

“Sources said that the woman had hired the assailants from Kisumu to assist in completing the mission, who are alleged to have arrived in Mombasa,” he said.

Mr Kiptum said Ms Adhiambo was arrested at the bank while also trying to contact the alleged assailants who were to receive the money before executing the murder.

“It is also alleged that the woman had previously tried to poison her husband but miraculously survived the ordeal,” he added.

He also claimed that the attempted murder must have resulted from the suspects’ efforts to inherit her husband’s property worth millions of shillings.

“Due to the gravity of the offense, I was unable to charge the suspects with the offense of conspiracy to murder until further investigations are done,” said Mr Kiptum.

The two suspects, however, did not object to the application that sought their detention for a period of 10 days to enable police complete their investigations.

The magistrate allowed the application and ordered they be detained at Bamburi police station until November 9 when the case will be mentioned.
