Mombasa County Government has donated Ksh.2.8 Million to Football Kenya Federation FKF Mombasa sub branch to help in funding football leagues in the county.
105 teams from Changamwe, Jomvu, Kisauni, Nyali and Mvita were also awarded cash and footballs on Sunday.
Speaking at Tononoka Social Hall during the unveiling of the cheque, Youth Sports and Gender Mombasa County Executive Abbas Mohammed, said the money will help promote youth development in the county.
“We want to make sure that no team will lack money to join different leagues; as so many teams have complained that they cannot afford and so we are here to offer support ,” Said Mr. Mohamed.
He also urged the county officials in the FKF Mombasa sub branch, to consider bringing in the ladies team to participate in the county leagues.
The FKF officials who attended the handing over ceremony also revealed that the federation is in the process of introducing Beach tournaments in the county.
“We thank the County government for funding us so as to improve games in the county, we have been in consultation with them since last year and we are glad that they approved the budget this year,” Said Mr. Goshi Juma Treasurer FKF Mombasa sub-branch.
According to Goshi, the money will be used to pay referee fees for the 2015 season, award gifts to the various 105 football teams , pay office rent and salaries for the people working in the FKF Mombasa sub-branch offices.
“We hope that there will be transparency in the administration so that the money can benefit the youth as the money was given because of them,” said Ahmed Ali; a football manager of Ambassador’s of hope football team attending the event.
Asked about the alleged land grabbing of a football field in Kisauni, Mr. Abbas Mohammed said the land in mention is a private property and the owner has legal rights, therefore they are in the process of negotiating to buy the land.
