Two people died on the spot while twelve others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at Denyenye, Ukunda- Likoni road.

Those who died are the driver and a woman passenger seated next to the driver.

Fourteen seater matatu ferrying passengers from Ukunda to Likoni lost control after its right hand side rear burst and crashed into residential houses on the side of the road.

Police at the scene told Baraka FM the accident happened at 12:30pm late Sunday.

An eyewitness who was on the house crashed by the vehicle, Athman Salah said he heard a loud bang before rushing to the scene.

“The driver died on the spot, but the woman next to him was still alive but when we removed her from the wreckage vehicle, she just cried once and that was it,” said Athman.

Another withness Mr. Salim Ahmed who was the fast to arrive at the scene said the other three passengers were stuck at the back seat and they were calling for assistance too.

“The three at back seat got minor injuries but those at front were seriously injured so I had to concentrate with those with serious injuries but unfortunately the driver and the woman died as we were trying to give them first aid,” said Mr. Salim.

A police officer who was at the scene but sought anonymity alleged that the matatu had excess passengers and it was over speeding.

“It was carrying 16 passengers instead of maximum of 14, it has passed through several police checks but it was never stopped,” said the officer.

The injured were rushed to Coast general hospital for further treatments.
