National soccer team Harambee Stars started their 2018 Wolrd Cup
qualifier campaign on high dishing out a 5-2 demolition of Mauritius
in preliminary match played at Stade Anjalay in Port Louis, Wednesday
Belgium based midfielder Johanna Omollo and Ayub Timbe put Stars 2-0
up in the first half before Gor Mahia defender Haroun Shakava slotted
in the third goal minutes after the breather.
Kenya almost let a 3-0 lead slip away after allowing the hosts to
reduce the deficit to 3-2 through Andy Sophie and Jonathan Bru setting
a nervy last ten minutes, but Johana Omollo and Michael Olunga
restored the three goals parity with late strikes.
Omollo, headed in Kevin Amwayi cross completing a brace before Gor
Mahia towering forward Michael Olunga made it a five-star performance
in the dying minutes to hand Kenya three goals advantage ahead of the
return leg slated for Sunday (October 11) in Nairobi.
The aggregate’s winner between Kenya and Mauritius will face Cape Verde
in the next round of the qualifiers scheduled for November.
