Victor Kiplagat Serem from Elgeyo Marakwet is the winner of the 2015 Mombasa Internation Marathon flagged off by Mombasa county deputy governor Hazel Katana at Mama Ngina Drive, on Sunday.
Kiplagat crossed the finish line in 2:19:47 to win ahead of Elderot born Joseph Biwot who clocked 2:20:50.
Biwot’s compatriot Philip Biwot finished third in 2:21:45 as Elderot based athletes swept top three spots.
The 2014 winner Frida Lobeda failed to defend her title after coming second two minutes behind Shelmith Muriuki who stormed into victory with 2:51:45.
Silvia Chebet finished third in 2:54:09, while Isabella and Leah Kuzar came second and third in 2:54:42 and 2:56:54 respectively.
Meanwhile, Edwin Kipsang Rotich claimed men’s 10km race after crossing the finish line in 30:15:18. Machakos born Patrick Mutunga came second in 30:27:31, while Stephen Mwendwa from Makueni clocked 30:41: 85 to finish third.
Nancy Jepkosgei won women’s 10km race in 34:29:39, Susan Koskei was second in 35:14:25, while Christine Moraa came third in 35:22:16.
Elite Marathon winners took home 1.5mn shilling as runners up pocketed 650,000 shillings, while third placed athletes were awarded 350,000 each courtesy of Mombasa county Government and Safaricom Limited.
James Mbugua and Tabitha Chebet hold the Mombasa International Marathon men’s and women’s records in 2 hrs 08 minutes and 2 hrs 36 minutes respectively.
