Three members of the same family died on the spot after the car they were travelling in rammed into a stationary lorry along Voi-Mwatate road Wednesday morning.
The police said the car was travelling from Wundanyi to Makueni County for a family function when it was involved in the grisly dawn accident.
Among the dead are two women and a man. The driver survived the crash and was rushed to Moi Hospital in Voi in critical condition.
Mwatate OCPD Mr. Francis Mwangi said initial reports indicate that the car was speeding and had attempted to avoid a head-on collision with an incoming vehicle. In the process, the ill-fated vehicle had swerved and rammed into the lorry, killing the three people on the spot.
“The site where the accident occurred is fairly straight and the driver might have speeding,” he said. Investigations have already been launched into the accident.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Moi hospital mortuary in Voi for post mortem.
The police boss urged the drivers plying the roads to be extra careful and observe traffic rules. He warned that with the newly rehabilitated roads being opened for use by people, there was a risk of more accident should drivers fail to exercise caution.
Cases of accidents involving private cars have been on the rise in the region for the past few months.
Two weeks ago, a private car had hit a pothole before losing control and killing a woman at Ndii area.
