Baraka FM News anchor George Otieno has been nominated as a finalist in the CNN Multi choice African journalist of the year 2015, becoming the first Kenyan Journalist from the Coast region to win nomination for the coveted and most prestigious award for journalists across Africa.
He was nominated from across 1,400 entries received from over 34 nations across Africa.
“CNN called me from London to inform me about my nomination out of 1400 entries following a feature I sent them,” Otieno, who was on leave, said on telephone.
The 5 minute radio feature he submitted dubbed Obstetric Fistula touched on 3 women who suffered from the condition but eventually got treatment and healed completely.
“It was my first ever entry and now I have also made history as the first ever Coast journalist to be a finalist in the…. award …,” he added, excited.
The unique feature was under health category.
Otieno will be among other nominees invited for this year’s CNN Multi-choice award gala event set for 8th October in Nairobi where winners across different categories will be awarded.
2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the African Journalist Awards.
