A prison warder at the Hindi prison in Lamu was on Monday afternoon found dead under unclear circumstances .
Corporal Siad Bare 55, was found dead on one of the roads in Hindi town.
James Kariuki ,a boda boda operator in Hindi who discovered the officer’s body, said the corporal was in his official prison uniform when his body was discovered.
”I think he was beaten to death and his body brought here or he was beaten up where he was found. His neck and head were badly swollen and he had bruises all over his body,” said Kariuki.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Lamu West OCPD Zachary Kimani said the officer collapsed and died probably due to a heart attack.
Kimani however rubbished rumors that the officer could have been beaten to death by unknown people.
“The reports I received indicate that the officer collapse and died while taking a stroll in Hindi town. I suspect he suffered a heart attack. This rumor that he was beaten to death is unfounded,” said Kimani.
His body has already been taken to his home in Hola, Tana River for burial.
Separately, police in Lamu are hunting down a renowned criminal said to have escaped while at the hands of the police on Monday.
Yassir Omar is said to have escaped from the police while being taken back to the Hindi prison.
Omar is currently facing numerous charges among them robbery with violence, battering and injuring and trying to escape from police custody.
This is not the first time the suspect tried to escape police custody.
On January 23 this year, while being escorted to court by police in Lamu town, Omar escaped but was re-arrested weeks later.
Early last week, the Lamu Law court denied him bond on grounds that his criminal record was way deep and that his release would create tension among locals.
