A middle aged man lost his life on Tuesday after the walls of a quarry collapsed on him in Vitengeni, Ganze within Kilifi county.
The 2pm incident occurred as the victim and his colleagues were mining stones, even as officials warned that the heavy rains currently being experienced in the country, had made it dangerous to work in quarries especially at the Coast.
Kilifi county police commander Douglas Kanja said the victim, David Chengo Karisa, had died as his fellow workers tried to rescue him.
The owner of the quarry said Kanja tried to run away from collapsing wall but did not make it.
“We suspect that the wall became heavy following rains that have been witnessed in this area over a week now. It’s by Gods grace we didn’t lose many lives since he wasn’t alone in the quarry,” Benson Makau, the quarry owner, said.
