Police shot and killed two suspected robbers along Mombasa’s Moi avenue on Thursday afternoon, who they said had committed robbery earlier within the city, and had been terrorising residents and businessmen in the city for a while.
The suspects had escaped from the earlier crime scene, and were planning to rob a car show room along the busy street, said Henry Ondiek, head of Mombasa Criminal Investigation Department (CID), unaware that police officers were on their trail.
“Our officers who were responding to a robbery incident encountered three thugs on a motorcycle, who happened to have be the same ones that had carried out the robbery. They were challenged to stop but they fired at our officers, in return the officers gunned down two of the suspects,” Ondiek, said, adding that one other had escaped.
He said they recovered a pistol, twelve rounds of ammunition, two magazines and a civilian firearm license believed to have been stolen from one of the suspects’ victims.
A motorcycle the suspects were using was also recovered during the 12 noon shooting at Ganjoni post office round about.
“Mombasa city has experienced calm for a while now, and we intend to maintain it that way,” said Ondiek.
