Three people died after a mosque that was under renovation collapsed on worshippers in Pate Island, Lamu County on Wednesday.
The old mosque had undergone several renovations earlier, before it caved in as faithfuls were conducting prayers, Miiri Njenga, Lamu County commissioner, told Baraka FM on telephone.
“It is an old mosque and I believe despite the renovations, it could no longer stand the test of time. Unfortunately we have lost three people and two other survivors who had been buried under the rubble have been pulled out,” Njenga said.
Fear was rife in the area that several other people may have been trapped in the rubble.
Miiri said already a rescue operation by the police and the Kenya Red Cross was under way to try and find any more bodies that may still have been trapped.
The bodies of the deceased were prepared for burial later the same day according to Muslim traditions, as survivors were rushed to the Lamu district hospital for treatment.
