Police officers from the flying squad unit shot and killed three suspected robbers in Changamwe, Mombasa County on Wednesday morning as they stopped at a petrol station with the intention to rob.
The three who were in a saloon car went to the Shell petrol station and asked to have their car fueled before officers who were on their trail ambushed them and ordered them to lie down.
Witnesses said the officers searched the men’s car and found two AK 47 rifles, 62 rounds ammunition and three magazines wrapped in a shirt and trousers at the rear seat, before they shot and killed them on the spot.
“They arrived here in a car and asked me to put petrol worth 500 shillings in their car. As I started to do that, they suddenly told me to move aside if I valued my life, but thank God police were around here and have killed them all,” a female pump attendant who did not want to be named, told Baraka FM.
Police said they had prior information that the suspects planned to rob the petrol station.
“They pretended to be pushing their car into the petrol station so that it would seem like it had run out of fuel, but our officer accosted them before they could be ready, and killed them,” Sevelino Kubai, Mombasa County deputy police commander, told Journalists at the scene.
The bullet-riddled bodies of the suspects which lay in a pool of blood were taken to the Coast general hospital mortuary as shocked onlookers stood by.
