Two people were shot and killed, and two barmaids wounded when gunmen raided a night club in Mombasa’s Majengo area early Tuesday.
Police said two masked men brandishing pistols entered Sega bar along Kenyatta Avenue at around 3:30am, and demanded cash before they shot dead two men who tried to resist the robbery.
The two bar maids were shot on the thighs after they defied an order to lie down, police said, and are admitted at the Coast regional general hospital.
Police termed the incident an ordinary robbery, and said they were pursuing the suspects who escaped on a motorbike.
“We recovered four cartridges of 9mm and so far we have arrested nobody,” Geoffrey Mayek, Mombasa police chief, said.
A waitress who was wounded said the robbery took place as they were closing down to go home.
“I was carrying a dust bin going outside, and a man approached me from the road and ordered me to go back inside the bar. He was carrying a pistol. I threw away the dust bin and as I was running back, he shot and hit me on the thigh,” Victoria Achieng, said from the hospital, moments before doctors removed the bullet from her thigh.
Rachel Mueni, a cashier at the bar, said the men shot twice in the air and ordered everyone to lie on the floor.
“Then one came to me and told me to give him cash if I wanted to stay alive. I gave him and they left,” a shaken Mueni told Baraka FM, adding that the amount they took was over 20,000 shillings.
