Students at Malindi High School, Kilifi County, were on Tuesday ordered to go home and the school closed indefinitely after they went on rampage protesting against the arrest of four of their colleagues.
Police arrested the four after they allegedly sodomised a form one student at the school, inflicting serious injuries that had him admitted at the Malindi district hospital in critical condition.
A source from the school who requested anonymity told Baraka FM, that students started rioting on Monday night after they learnt about the arrests, and went ahead to vandalise school property.
“They locked in the staffroom, teachers who were conducting and supervising evening preps, switched off security lights, and started pelting stones at anything with a glass,” said the source, who is a junior employee at the school.
“We are lucky the principal arrived in time and called police who restored order until this morning when all the students were ordered to leave the school.”
The school administration was on Tuesday trying to estimate the extend of damage caused, with indications that the losses would be heaped on the shoulders of the parents.
