A man believed to have been behind a grenade attack that injured two people including a police officer in Mombasa two weeks ago, was shot and killed by police in Malindi, Kilifi area police chief Justine Nyaga said on Saturday.
The suspect identified as Clement Ngaruya Mwabitsi was shot after he attempted to hurl another grenade at police officers who had cornered him and ordered him to surrender.
He died later while being treated at Kilifi County hospital.
Nyaga said police had been trailing the suspect who was among a gang of three, and had gone into hiding in Malindi after the attack at Biashara Street in Mombasa a fortnight ago.
Police recovered a grenade and a motorbike at the suspect’s hideout.
Detectives are also investigating the source of text messages that have been circulating within Kilifi County alluding to alleged plans to attack a popular hotel in within the County.
The messages warned that an attack would be launched at the hotel if a planned seminar on girl child education would be allowed to take place there.
The seminar however went on as planned after bomb experts combed the hotel and confirmed it was safe.
