Bomb experts in Mombasa on Saturday detonated a home made grenade that had been abandoned near a church within Tononoka area, and officials said the detonation had averted what would have been a major disaster.
Three young men carrying the explosive in a bag abandoned it next to the church, and local residents alerted authorities who moved in swiftly and secured the area, Mombasa County commissioner Nelson Marwa, told journalists at the scene.
“We have the identity of the suspects, and we have instructed security officers to ensure they are arrested before tomorrow,” Marwa said.
The county commissioner said the suspects were linked to Thursday’s grenade attack in Marikiti market where a police officer and a civilian were wounded.
Police had a rough time trying to keep away hundreds of curious onlookers who gathered to witness the dramatic detonation of the grenade.
Locals said the grenade may have been targeting the church.
