Panic gripped Matondoni and Kipungani villages in Lamu County on Thursday after a stray lion attacked and killed at least 16 donkeys.
The lion continued to attack more animals in the area, local residents said, as Kenya Wildlife (KWS) Officials frantically made search efforts saying the predator could not be traced.
Farming and herding activities have been halted in the area as locals feared exposing themselves and their animals to the risk of attack by the elusive beast.
Sources on the ground told Baraka FM that even school going children stayed at home to keep safe from possible attacks by the lion that is yet to be traced.
Local leaders asked those whose animals had been killed to report to the area KWS offices, saying they would push for compensation.
Fresh and partly eaten carcasses of donkeys were found scattered in different areas of the two villages, raising fears that the lion could target humans.
Lamu County is known to have many donkeys which are used for transport within the islands that cannot be accessible using vehicles.
