Police in Mombasa on Tuesday used specialized explosives to open a suspicious bag that had been abandoned at a city hotel and suspected to be carrying explosives.
The bag was abandoned at Summerlink Hotel, right in the center of town, by an irate man who had been denied entry into the hotel, Mombasa deputy police chief Tom Okoth told journalists at the scene.
A crowd of curious onlookers milled around the area as bomb experts barricaded the area before they ripped the bag open.
But the bag had nothing except clothes, shoes, a passport and other personal belongings, whose owner Okoth said they would seek for interrogation.
Two weeks ago another bag was found abandoned at Mwembe Tayari market, a day after twin blasts killed four people in Mombasa.
Police have warned people against gathering around such scenes, saying it could a deliberate plot by criminals to launch further attacks.
On Monday two suspects were arraigned before a Mombasa court charged with being responsible for the blast that occurred in Nyali’s Reef Hotel.
